Seniors and Eating the Rainbow
Did you know you can learn a lot about food from the way it looks? The color of a fruit or vegetable can give you a clue about the nutrients it contains: green has chlorophyll; red, lycopene; and blue, antioxidants. Additionally, the darker in color the produce is, the more nutritional value it has. The next time you go grocery shopping, make it your goal to "eat the rainbow." Aiming to "eat the rainbow" each week is a fun way people of all ages can remind themselves to increase the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables we consume. "Eating the rainbow" helps us enjoy a broad, diverse array of produce and gives our diet variation.
   
Here are a few tips to make "eating the rainbow" easier this summer:
 
- Keep your kitchen stocked 
with fresh, frozen, canned, and dried produce.
 
 
- Pre-rinse and pre-cut fruit 
and veggies for hassle-free snacking and
 eating on the go. 
 
- Visit the local farmer's 
market for the freshest, in-season produce.
 
 
- Be adventurous. 
Fill your 
grocery basket with fruits and vegetables
 of all shapes, sizes, colors, and 
textures. 
 
- Buy fresh vegetables and 
fruits when they are ripe to enjoy peak
 flavors and lower prices. 
 
- When you serve yourself, fill 
at least half of the plate with colorful
 vegetables and fruits.  
 
- For a refreshing and 
nutritious twist, add fresh fruit to a classic salad.
 
 
- Enjoy a delicious fruit 
smoothie for dessert. Add a cup of your
 favorite veggies for even more 
nutritional value. 
 
This summer, give "eating the rainbow" a try. A well-rounded, balanced diet will 
do your body a world of good!

and mood, reduced levels of inflammation, reduced risk of heart disease, cancer 
prevention, a boosted immune system, reduced damage from free radicals, 
regulated cholesterol, increased cognitive function and brainpower, an enhanced 
memory, improved prostate health, increased eye health, strengthened teeth and 
bones, as well as richer and healthier blood.
